To satisfy these requirements, the Episodic player senses a viewer’s playback conditions, checking for changes in their bandwidth, availability of CPU resources, and the amount of screen real-estate devoted to video playback.

Based on these measures, which are sampled a few times a second, the player can automatically scale up or down both the bitrate and resolution of the video being played. Doing all of this without the viewer ever noticing is key to providing an instant-on telelvision-like viewing experience.
